What Inspection Devices Are Used to Track Moisture in Saugus Homes?
Water damage? SERVPRO can help! We have the training and equipment to restore your home.
If Water Cleanup is Needed in Saugus, SERVPRO Uses Specialty Equipment to Locate Moisture
When our crew arrives on the scene, a scope gets done on the home. Scoping locates the areas where water has gone and determines the extent of absorption by the structure and the content. We use various devices in our water damage restoration services to track the moisture.
Water Restoration Inspection Devices
Water cleanup in Saugus begins with tracking the moisture, and we use the following:
- Moisture Sensors– Detects moisture in carpets and padding. Sharp probes penetrate through the carpeting to determine if the subfloor below has been impacted.
- Thermal Imaging Cameras– Infrared cameras monitor the moisture in building material. During the scope, they provide a fast evaluation of the extent of the water. They show the path the water has taken and prove successful drying at the end of the job. This device is not always precise with moisture tracking.
- Moisture Meters-Measures the actual moisture content or level of materials. Different meters may get used for specific materials such as drywall. There are both penetrating and non-penetrating meters.
- Hygrometers – Measures the relative humidity and temperature of air masses, helping with the drying process.
When water damage remediation is needed, these tools help our techs to do the best job possible. Whether you are dealing with a water intrusion from burst pipes, ceiling leaks, or basement flooding, our team provides water cleanup that leaves your home “Like it never even happened.” For water damage repairs, call SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn at (978) 744-0409 today.

SERVPRO is Based in Saugus and Can Help you with House Fire Cleanup
Saugus is a township on the outskirts of Boston in Massachusetts. The area is famous for its ironworks which made it a prominent manufacturing center for much of the seventeenth century when producing an estimated ton of iron per day. During the industrial revolution, manufacturing businesses returned and grew a strong reputation for the production of shoes. At one point, this small township was exporting its signature boots across the United States and the world. Much of Saugus's town center history has been preserved with some monuments, such as the historic ironworks, giving visitors a peek at American life in the 1670s. Saugus committed troops to the Unionist movement during the American Civil War, and there are numerous memorials in the township to commemorate those that contributed.
Much of visiting Saugus relies on being willing to explore some of its stunning state parks. The Breakheart Reservation is busy all year long with hundreds of acres of forestry, fishing, camping, and hiking trails. The Saugus Ironworks is part of the reservation, redeveloped as an educational and interactive museum of history. Guests can explore and get involved in much of the iron-making processes at a historic site that was among the first to exist in America's colonies. Situated nearby to Mt. Washington State Park and Lynn Woods, the area has become attractive to rock climbers. At the same time, casual interest can be fed at the MetroRock Climbing center, which offers tutelage from experienced instructors for all levels.
- Legoland Discovery Center is an entertainment center and amusement park that attracts thousands of families each year. Legoland has theme-park rides, playgrounds, food trucks, and low admission prices often available on deals.
- Nahant Beach and the Lynn Shore Reservation are just a stone's throw outside Saugus, with a quieter atmosphere than Revere Beach. It is kept clean throughout the year and is especially popular during the warm summer months. During Fall and Winter, the Lynn Shore Reservation is a spot full of indigenous birds and wildlife.
- Bish Bash Falls is located in the Mt. Washington State Forest, and visitors can take the short one-mile hike from the parking lot to witness them in person. The waterfall itself is sixty feet high, and tours for the family are available during the year.

Saugus, MA, is a fascinating town, rich in history. The Hammersmith was built in 1646 in the town and was one of the most advanced ironworks in North America. The 19th century brought the ice industry to the area. Shoes, wool items, and tobacco were big industries during the Industrial Revolution. No matter the era, they had workers who needed to be fed. Today businesses throughout Saugus still need lunch breaks, and here are some of their favorite restaurants.
Angela’s Coal Fired Pizza
Pizza is always an excellent choice for lunch or dinner, especially when shared with friends or family. The menu is limited, but what they do have is delicious. The wings are fantastic, not overly sauced like you often get. Choose your crust type, and then pick out your favorite toppings. The crispy crust holds up well to all the sauce and cheesy goodness.
Iron Town Diner
Diners are the perfect place to fuel up for breakfast and get home-cooked food for lunch. If you like red velvet cake, you have to try the pancakes that share the name. The Reuben sandwich is a local favorite, as is the Greek salad. Whatever you order, you will not be disappointed in the taste or amount. The portions served are very generous, and the staff is friendly and efficient.
If Mexican or Cajun is your go-to food, you will enjoy this restaurant. The menu has a great selection and is an interesting blend of cultures. It is a family-friendly eatery that is reasonably priced. Some of their menu items include salmon tacos, Louisiana gumbo, and enchiladas.
This restaurant is one of Saugus’ hidden gems. Some of the favorites are chicken marsala, chicken parmigiana, and gnocchi. It is a cozy place with a décor that invites you to sit and stay awhile. The cuisine is what would be considered “American” Italian but is scrumptious. It is a restaurant you will find yourself heading to again and again.
The Blue Ox
The Blue Ox is a great choice for lunch or dinner. They serve up some unique dishes such as pumpkin ravioli. Your choices range from burgers to lamb chops. They have a nice seafood selection as well, which includes crispy crab cakes. The seared pork belly over Asian slaw is a house specialty. They have gluten-free options. For dessert, the Crème Brulee is a must.

Saugus Business Owners Count on SERVPRO For Professional Fire Damage Restoration Services
Saugus had come a long way from when it was first settled in 1629. The city's name comes from an Algonquin word for "great" or "extended," describing the vast forested area, the present-day city's location.
In 1646, the first big business began in Saugus, the ironworks, called Hammersmith. This facility put out nearly one ton of iron daily but did not turn enough of a profit to stay in business, and it closed in 1670. At the time of its operation, it was considered one of the most advanced places that produced iron. After it closed, the building went into a disrepair state and was covered by underbrush. An archaeologist named Roland W. Robbins discovered the site in 1948 and reconstructed the Saugus Iron Works with financial assistance from the First Iron Works Association. The building opened to the public as a museum in 1954 and became part of the National Park Service properties in 1968.
During the nineteenth century, the iron industry had long since waned, and the ice manufacturing picked up speed in Saugus. This cottage industry's roots can get traced to 1804 when Frederic Tudor cut ice from a pond on his land and sold it to nearby Martinique. He was inspired to do this after a trip to the Caribbean where tourists were lamenting, they wished they had ice in their drinks. Tudor became known as "The Ice King," and he made a fortune selling ice worldwide, as far away as India and Hong Kong. Some of the most significant factors that helped Tudor become a success were:
- Ice was free.
- Sawdust used to pack the ice was free.
- Ships in Boston Harbor were empty and cheap to hire.
The U.S. 1 Highway, known as the Newburyport Turnpike in 1805 when it got built, was considered a mistake initially as the designers had it running through hills, swamps, and grass grew over the road. It required regular maintenance until automobiles became the most widely chosen form of transportation in the 1930s, and it became a toll-free public highway. As the traffic increased, savvy business people moved along Route 1, and in the present, this area generates millions of dollars in sales yearly for Saugus.
President Andrew Jackson donated a revenue surplus of $2,000 to build the first town hall in Saugus. The building still stands and gets used as an American Legion Hall. The actual cost to build the hall put the city in debt to the tune of $48,000.
Saugus played a crucial role in the Civil War and sent many of its citizens to fight. Several notable names emerged from the city, such as Gustavus Fox, who was the United States Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. A ship launched in 1863, a Union Navy monitor, named the USS Saugus, in honor of the town's commitment. After the end of the war, resident Henry E. Hone donated a large monument made of granite to honor the city's soldiers. The memorial contains all 166 names of the men who served in the war on bronze tablets.
In the late 1800s, another industry sprang up in Saugus: the tobacco industry. Because during the Civil War, many of the significant southern tobacco plantations got destroyed. The local company of Waitt & Bond became the major exporter of cigars and snuff for the rest of the country, and soon the city was the nation's largest producer of those products. When the tobacco industry began to decline in the 1970s, the city attempted to create two new businesses - an oil refinery and a garbage incineration plant. The plans did not pan out for the refinery, but in 1975 the incineration plant opened. It became the first commercially successful type of operation of this nature in the United States and still runs in the present. The top three industries in the city today are:
- Waste management
Does A Saugus Business Need to Close During Commercial Fire Damage Restoration?
In most cases, commercial fire damage restoration, a Saugus property will need to close during the services. The reasons can range from the danger of structural damage causing an injury to air quality concerns from airborne particulate.
SERVPRO technicians have an array of specialized equipment to use against soot and smoke damage. The techs deploy air scrubbers and sometimes use negative air chambers to improve the air quality during the restoration. When only a portion of the structure has damage, the techs put up containment to inhibit the spread of airborne soot. Cleanup for this type of loss takes several forms, including:
- Immersion cleaning as needed for non-porous items.
- Removal of smoke damage from surfaces using various methods.
- Application of sealants as needed.
The techs give special care to moving out items that show no signs of damage and separate them from inspection for cleaning and reuse. When articles get removed from a worksite, also known as a pack-out, the techs take careful notes about each item's location and condition. When the business is ready to reopen, it gets put back in its original place.
This SERPVRO location holds a general contractor license #cs-114298 and offers local commercial properties the opportunity to streamline the restoration and rebuilding services as needed through one place. The trained techs can handle the structural reconstruction and replace drywall, flooring, or install carpet. The need for cosmetic touches such as painting walls and trim can complete the job and leave the building ready to reopen.
When Saugus properties need commercial fire damage restoration, the owners look to SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn at (978) 744-0409 for the solution. The trained technicians can handle any size clean up and make it, "Like it never even happened."
What Cleaning Is Necessary after West Lynn Furnace Puff Backs?
SERVPRO Suggests that local West Lynn neighbors call us to clean air ducts and interiors after a furnace puff back
Removing soot and smoke threats require several tools and products
After a small explosion in the oil furnace of your West Lynn home, you can contend with multiple hazardous and potentially threatening conditions. A furnace puff back throws oily residues and charged soot particles into connected rooms through vents in your HVAC system. Cleaning up after these events must happen as soon as possible, and we have experienced fire restoration professionals to help.
How Does the Full Scope of the Damage Get Identified?
Fire puff back cleaning in West Lynn homes begins with an evaluation of the premises. Considering that the effects of furnace puff backs are hazardous to those without the appropriate personal protective equipment, choosing professional evaluation and damage assessment is wise. Our project manager can quickly and thoroughly inspect the property and determine what steps are necessary for restoration.
How Do SERVPRO Professionals Clean Soot?
Soot represents a complicated makeup of various fuels and combusted materials. It can be made up of plastics, fabrics, wood, and in the case of furnace puff backs, oil. The choice of solvents and detergents used in surface cleaning is critical to prevent unnecessary damage to the underlying material. This greasy film is electrically charged complicating the wipe down. Smearing must be avoided to minimize any repainting of surfaces. Agitative cleaning practices can often reduce the presence of the spiderweb-like deposits around vents and ceilings before more direct cleaning practices are implemented. Some of these agitative cleaning approaches include:
- Dry vacuuming
- Soft-bristle brushing
- Steel wool
- Feather dusting
Are Odors a Concern After Puff Backs?
Petroleum smells are common in homes after furnace puff back incidents. Much like other structure fires that our restoration team might help address, we have specific deodorization practices that can overcome these effects. Most commonly, we may utilize a combination of thermal fogging, HEPA filtered air scrubbers, and hydroxyl generators to address trapped odors and smells in the HVAC system and impacted rooms.
Everyone running an oil-based furnace can do well to prepare themselves for the possibilities of puff back disasters. These situations can deposit harmful soot particles throughout the residence, requiring the experienced response of our SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn team to help. You can reach us 24/7 at (978) 634-3355.

Saugus' town is a part of the Greater Boston Area with a long manufacturing history and a current population of 26,628 people. The name Saugus is derived from the Algonquin people who originally settled in West Lynn, Reading, and Wakefield. As an early English settlement, the town made waves as one of the first Ironworks in the US, which began with the Saugus Iron Works in 1646. The national historic site used several water wheels to power the production and purification of Iron ore, and today has been faithfully reconstructed. At the same time, the surrounding grounds became a national park in 1968. The industrial revolution saw parts of Saugus become hotbeds for the mass production of shoes, tobacco, and many other enterprises. Despite being a relatively small township, Saugus played an important role both militarily and economically during the American Revolutionary War- the civil war monument in the town center pays tribute to those who dedicated their lives. Economically, the southern tobacco states were replaced temporarily by Saugus' Waitt and Bond, who set up in East Saugus.
Visits to Saugus promise a combination of history and wildlife. The reconstructed Saugus Iron Works on Central Street is a specific example. The heritage center runs many events throughout the year showing history buffs how the Iron Works purified iron ore, shaped materials, and drew power from the nearby water. The tours run on weekdays and through the week, led mainly by local park rangers and curators from the Ironworks museum. The Breakheart Reservation stretches 652 across both Saugus and Wakefield. Inside are two freshwater lakes as well as forestry and wildlife conservation. The opening hours are from sunrise to sunset, while there are several excellent hiking trails and supervised swimming sessions in some of the State Parks freshwater lakes. This site's archaeological significance can be enjoyed by taking some educational programs and tours through the various campsites. At the same time, cross-country skiing is encouraged during the winter months. Fishing, biking, and horseback riding are also regular events taking place at the Breakheart Reservation.
- The Square One Mall just off Route 1 has permanent stores, including Macy's, TJ Maxx, and Best Buy. The multi-storied shopping center features 100 shopping destinations with dining experiences serving the communities surrounding Saugus. - For entertainment, the Wicked Escapes adventure room on the broadway attracts visitors from nearby Boston and West Lynn. The setup is relatively simple, with guests given a set of orange overalls and some clues to help them escape a cell block. Group parties are welcomed, while these events can also make significant team-building training events for businesses.
- The Saugus Plaza offers a variety of nightlife and entertainment. On Main Street, Buffalo Wild Wings is a sports, wings, and cocktails bar for late-night revelers in the Saugus area. Opening hours run from 11 am to 11 pm every day, with their kitchen closing slightly early at 10 pm.
Exploring Saugus' unique history at the Boardman House.
The Boardman House is a historic site on Howard Street that has remained a part of Saugus since the seventeenth century. The building itself has somehow managed to remain mostly intact over the past 300 years and allows guests to experience the early settlers' lives in Massachusetts. The Boardman House was named after William Boardman, who worked as a joiner in 1692 when the house was built. The quality of building materials and construction within the home saw it fit to be made a Historic Landmark and earn a place on the register of historic places.
- Historic New England owns the land, a trustee-led preservation society with buildings of historical significance. Admissions to the Boardman House are $5 and include a tour of the various seventeenth-century building construction methods. Children and Seniors receive concessions.
- The Historic New England society was originally founded in 1910 by William Sumner Appleton, who, incidentally, also purchased the Boardman House around the same time. The organization frequently raises money for the upkeep of historical sites, increases its income by welcoming over 200,000 visitors each year, and operates through five New England states.
- The core mission statements behind this organization focus on sustainability, engagement, and preservation. Historic sites are brought to life by local historians, tours, and events throughout the year, including Saugus, taking part in the Fall Festival.

How West Lynn Has Grown and Evolved Since Colonial Times
Water damage mitigation is a keystone of SERVPRO services for West Lynn and Lynn
As one of the earliest European settlements in the state, (West) Lynn has a rich history and culture.
Lynn has a truly remarkable history that has helped to shape its future. From the settlements of Pilgrims and early European farmers to the role Massachusetts and Lynn would play in the American Revolution, there is a long and illustrious history. It is challenging to consider the changes and evolution that shaped the present and future versions of the city without taking the time to appreciate the stages that led to Lynn as many know it today. This population growth would also help services like our SERVPRO restoration professional recovery develop and grow at the same time.
There is an entire era of Lynn's history and growth before reaching the United States going to war with global superpower England. Pre-colonial settlements began in 1629, though at this time, Lynn would be known as Saugus based on the indigenous word for the area. Five prominent families pushing out from this development and Salem would ultimately create the start of present-day Lynn. These families operated and sustained a large mill devoted to timber, grains, and even alcoholic beverages placed in casks and sent to England for the enjoyment of King George. It would be until 1850 for Lynn to be incorporated as its own town.
In the years leading into the Revolutionary War and during this turmoil and strife, Lynn would become necessary for the union. The city held some of the most significant shoe manufacturing facilities. It would be the residents' hard work in these buildings that would ensure that the Continental Army had boots for the ongoing conflict. This trade would ultimately bring about a prosperous age for the town spanning into the 19th century. Our homage to this vital service Lynn provided is on our city seal, where you can see a colonial boot.
Historic Locations in Lynn
Lynn and its surrounding areas have dozens of structures that have been accredited as historic and significant by a national database. While we do have buildings in the region that can date back even before the formation of the United States, some of the most prominent and well-known of these historical properties include:
- Capitol Diner – This site is believed to be the final diner of its type by this company still in operation. It has been a staple restaurant on Union Street in Lynn since 1928.
- Lynn Armory – This facility has been in Lynn since 1893 and has seen many functions and owners from that time to the present. The armory has recently been approved for a project to convert the space into apartments for veterans.
- High Rock Tower – This is an 85-ft tall tower in the middle of the park of the same name in Lynn. The massive stone building was built by Jesse Hutchinson, famed in the area as one of the members of a renowned abolitionist singing group from the 1840s to the 1880s.
- Grand Army of the Republic Hall/Museum – This hall is now a museum dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic – an organization for American Civil War veterans. This hall is the last of its kind in Massachusetts and has maintained its appearance and functionality as living on as a museum.
- Fabens Building – Lynn was ravaged by a fire in 1889 that forced many properties to get reconstructed from the rubble. William Fabens would take the opportunity to construct a massive building to accommodate the need for large office space and storefronts.
Growing from Strong Roots
As the largest city in Essex County, Lynn has been steadily growing in population and through its industry and commercial offerings since accurate records were first kept in 1790. What was once a population of roughly 2300 after the Revolutionary War, Lynn has grown to accommodate nearly 95,000. The city had to work hard to overcome a bad reputation as an area that was crime-ridden for several decades as a more affordable subcommunity of Boston. Instead of the moniker "The City of Sin," officials spent much of the 1990s campaigning the municipality as the "City of Firsts."
Though many of these proposed 'firsts' were difficult to substantiate, it was enough to help put Lynn in a different light. City officials would suggest that Lynn, MA would be the first place that several of these events or circumstances first occurred:
- First tannery in the United States
- First American jet engine
- Lydia Pinkham - First woman in advertising
- First fire engine
- First electric streetcar operating in Massachusetts
- First iron works facility
- Birthplace of the roast beef sandwich

West Lynn Homeowners Can Call SERVPRO for Professional Fire Restoration
Can Fire-Caused Odors Be Eliminated from Residential Structures?
In West Lynn homes, SERVPRO can eliminate, or cover-up, malodors. Our technicians are highly trained for cleaning property, removing odor-producing damage, and other tasks needed to recreate a pleasant, healthy environment after any type of fire in the home.
What Steps Do Technicians Take to Restore Homes?
To eliminate or reduce the effects of fire damage in West Lynn homes, our teams perform the following steps:
- Remove the odor source debris – Items damaged physically by the fire exude malodor particles. Technicians remove every item scorched by the fire which greatly reduces the amount of odor-causing particles and also the number of chemical deodorizers needed in the home.
- Clean surfaces of malodor particles – Even a small amount of particles transported by the smoke can generate malodors, so technicians clean every possible affected surface at the point of origin, and everywhere that smoke from the fire could have carried odor-causing particles.
- Recreate the “fire” – Some odor particles can penetrate deeply into the wood, fabrics, and other property. To eliminate them, technicians can create a cloud of deodorizing particles that penetrate as deeply as the malodors to bind with and eliminate them.
Is It Possible to Block Odors So Technicians Do Not Have to Use Demolition?
Yes. If SERVPRO team leaders determine that demolition and replacement are too difficult, expensive, or not necessary, then sealing surfaces is the preferred option. For walls and ceilings, technicians use paint and primer with a chemical sealant that blocks malodors from being released into the residence. For air ducts, they spray a sealant over every reachable surface to block malodors.
To begin removing odors and other fire restoration procedures for your home, call SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn at (978) 744-0409 today. Our teams are here to return your home to its original state and make the damage disappear "Like it never even happened."
Does Carpet Have to Get Replaced Automatically After Water Damage in Saugus?
Repairing your house after water damage can be a complicated process. Contact SERVPRO 24/7 for professional remediation services.
SERVPRO technicians can assist local Saugus homeowners in the restoration of wet carpet and, in many cases, save them the cost of replacement
One of the critical elements to limiting the need to replace items after a water disaster in a home is to begin the cleanup as rapidly as possible. There are several actions that SERVPRO techs can perform to increase the chances of a complete restoration of wet carpet in Saugus homes such as:
- Drilling weep-holes to assist with both drainage and airflow
- Floating the carpet during the drying phase of mitigation
- Using weighted-extractor heads to push out the maximum amount of moisture
What Does Floating Carpet Mean During Water Damage Restoration?
After a pipe break or other type of water damage restoration need in your Saugus home, you might hear terms such as tenting or floating in reference to your carpet. These are both common actions performed by SERVPRO to increase the chances of successfully drying the carpet and pad in place.
Tenting is the use of plastic sheeting over a portion of wet carpet, usually a smaller-sized area. Both air movers and dehumidifiers get connected to the "tent" and deliver warm, dry air while simultaneously porting away moisture water vapor through the dehumidification equipment.
When SERVPRO technicians "float" a carpet, the method is exactly what it sounds like. The techs loosen one side of the carpet and position air movers to direct the airflow under the carpet, effectively causing it to rise off the pad while allowing both elements to dry completely. Both of these techniques allow the techs to limit the disruption to the home by drying the carpet in place.
Contact SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn, at (978) 744-0409 when you need water damage restoration of any size to your home. The certified techs are available 24/7 to clean up your home and make it, "Like it never even happened."

Should Homeowners in Coastal Towns Be Worried About Increased Flooding Risks?
SERVPRO Says--We work with your flood claim adjuster to restore your damaged Saugus Property
Houses in Saugus are Prone to Coast Flooding, and SERVPRO is There to Provide Cleanup & Restoration
Saugus is a town near Boston that is rich in history. It goes back to the early 1600s, has roots in fighting for independence in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. This quaint town is home to the Saugus Iron Works, which began in 1646 and was the first integrated ironworks in all of North America. Saugus was a focal point of the industrial revolution. As businesses thrived, the town grew, and today over 26,000 people reside there. It is also a coastal town, which means those businesses and homes are subject to flooding.
Is There an Increased Risk of Flooding in a Coastal Town?
Over the last 92 years, Saugus, MA, has seen an increase in sea level rise of approximately 10 inches. In 1978 floodwaters topped at 4.8 feet. Many factors contribute to the ocean rising, including warming ocean waters, shrinking ice, and sinking land. A tide station in Boston, just 8 miles from Saugus, has recorded 149 days since 1950, where the flood thresholds exceeded the standard set by the local National Weather Service. All this means an increase in storm surges and the chance of flood damage in Saugus. SERVPRO understands the impact this can have on local homes and is ready to provide the needed mitigation should a flood occur.
How Critical Are the First 24 Hours?
In any flood situation, immediate intervention is vital. With floodwaters, it is even more critical due to the contaminated waters. Every minute that goes by can lead to water damage to both the home and its content. If allowed to sit unattended, within 24 hours, the following can occur:
- Laminate flooring begins to break down and peel.
- Carpeting continues to soak up water leading to stretching, weak carpet fibers, and delamination.
- Carpets exposed to contaminated water typically need replacing.
- Warping and swelling occur in particleboard and pressed wood items.
- Drywall and ceiling tiles begin to bulge, crumble, and breakdown, which makes them a safety hazard.
- Structural breakdowns can result from the force of collected water.
- Mold and mildew start to form. This can happen in as little as 24-48 hours.
- Metals may start to corrode.
- Musty odors spread throughout the home.
- Bacteria and other biohazards in the water can worsen, causing potential health effects to those exposed.
SERVPRO knows the flood damage that can occur and works tirelessly, 7 days a week, to provide fast water mitigation. The more time that passes, the more damage and more loss that occurs. The need for replacement over restoration goes up as well. Homeowners should be aware that in a flood situation, items and structural elements may need replacing more often than other types of home flooding.
What Safety Issues Does SERVPRO Look For?
Safety is our number one priority. We do not want the residents of the home or our crews to put themselves in any type of danger. When the Green Team arrives at the scene, a project manager ensures a scope gets performed on the property. Emergency mitigation may be required, such as roof tarping. Once the scope determines the extent of the flood damage, then a work plan is put into place. While the scope is undergoing the technicians are looking for the following:
Contamination – Floodwaters flow fast and furiously through towns and streets, picking up all types of biohazards. This can include bacteria, debris, and even medical waste. The degree of the contamination, the level of the water, and the appropriate action to clean are determined. No one should enter floodwater without the proper PPE.
Structural Damage - Structural elements can absorb water and become oversaturated leading to degradation. The structural integrity of subflooring, flooring, and wall systems become compromised and can collapse.
Content Damage – Extra precautions need to be taken when cleaning and restoring items damaged in a flood due to contamination. SERVPRO techs are experienced in assisting homeowners and insurance adjusters in understanding what is salvageable and what needs to be thrown away.
Is There Anything I Can Do to Prepare?
If you reside in a coastal town like Saugus, having adequate flood insurance is key. An emergency plan that covers what your family is to do in the case of a disaster is a wise idea. Safety should always be your first concern, so obey all evacuation orders. There is no material thing out there worth risking your life. Keep valuables such as jewelry on higher levels and in waterproof containers. Have backups of all essential documents and place originals in water and fireproof packaging. Check your storm drains and gutters often so water can flow freely.
If the worst happens, call SERVPRO and let us deal with the stress of cleanup, repair, and restoration. We work alongside your insurance company to ensure things go smoothly. Our company is licensed and bonded – Contractor Licenses: General: cs-114298.

Can Low Temperatures and Frozen Pipes Leave Your Home with Flood Damage in Saugus?
If a frozen pipe breaks in your home, Contact SERVPRO for restoration.
SERVPRO can remove water damage after a frozen pipe breaks.
Frozen pipes are more than just an inconvenience in Saugus. While your family goes without running water, the pipes' pressure expands as the frozen area swells. As soon as the affected area of pipe bursts, ice-cold water sprays into your home. Depending on the pipe's diameter, this can range from hundreds of gallons an hour to several hundred a minute.
SERVPRO helps homeowners deal with all types of flood damage to their Saugus properties, and our building crew helps with repairs. Having an extra resource available to our customers speeds things up while keeping costs low and manageable. When pipes break inside exterior walls, many customers are glad to find that we can handle tear-out work and minor demolition, as well.
Drain lines can also freeze and break, spilling contents inside your house. We can mitigate the damage and help restore your home in such situations. Making the area clean again is crucial to protecting your family. Decontaminating the site might also need to happen in cases involving dirty water.
As soon as we remove the excess water, we can begin drying the area. In winter, we can choose between using isolated heat or increasing the entire house's temperature. Closing off the intake vent can keep the increased water vapor from affecting the rest of the house. Isolating the area, including the heat used, can make the process much faster.
We discuss these options with our customers. We know that dry winter air inside your home can become damp-feeling when extra moisture enters, and we want to avoid doing anything that might make your home uncomfortable, even temporarily. A broken pipe can make the entire home feel damp, so using desiccant machines in other areas might alleviate this for you.
For damage related to flooding and storms, call SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn, at (978) 744-0409. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster and can start the mitigation process soon after arriving.

How Does SERVPRO Clean Spots and Stains During Water? Cleanup in Saugus
The tools and equipment our technicians have, can help remove all forms of water damage.
Our technicians use various tests and tools to help remove spots and stains
It is common to expect severe losses after water spills in a property. However, there are cases when minor imperfections have a significant impact. When performing water cleanup in Saugus, there is a need to ensure that any stain or spots are addressed, restoring the property to its preloss state. SERVPRO uses different approaches to deal with such imperfections.
Spots, Stains, and Discolorations
For a team to ensure that Saugus's water cleanup process addresses all imperfections that develop, there is a need to identify clearly what a problem involves. There is a difference between spots, stains, and discolorations in fabrics and other property materials. A spot signifies that a substance has been added to a fiber. A stain, on the other hand, involves the addition of dye molecules to a fiber. Discoloration is the loss of color, meaning that a section of the fiber is lighter than the surrounding areas. The differences might seem minor, but they play a huge role in determining the restoration procedure.
Determining the Type of Soil
After the spots and stains form, it is not always possible to tell what caused them, especially if the area has already been cleaned. Our SERVPRO technicians, therefore, try to identify any spots and stains within the property before cleaning starts. Most of the stains form from regular items found in the house, including medication, grooming products, plants, or furniture. If the cause is not conclusive, our technicians can use pH test processes to determine the substance that forms the spots. We can also rely on physical aspects such as spread patterns, which indicate the stain formation process.
Given time, most blemishes set, ruining the affected fiber permanently, but fast action can help prevent such an outcome. Our SERVPRO technicians use various procedures, including vacuuming, scraping, blotting, and flushing, to remove such blemishes as fast as possible. We use mild detergents, plain water, and volatile dry solvents to deal with water-based and oil-based blemishes.
Spots and stains can ruin the outcome of a cleanup process. Call SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn at (978) 744-0409, to help remove traces left by an incident, "Like it never even happened."

Count on the professionals at SERVPRO to restore your home after fire damage.
Well-Trained and Equipped SERVPRO Managers and Work Crews Assess Fire Damage In West Lynn Residences to Identify and Implement Controls for Hazards to Ensure Safety for All
After a fire in West Lynn, safety, and health considerations loom large for both your family and the technicians working onsite to mitigate and remediate the scenario. Establishing a safe work site requires the homeowner and the restorer to communicate and collaborate.
What Is the First Step in a Fire Mitigation Situation?
Upon restorers' arrival at your West Lynn home, fire damage hazard evaluation by a trained and experienced project is job one. In addition to a visual inspection, expect our project manager to inquire of you about any known safety hazards. We conduct testing if needed to delve deeper into the types and severity of potential hazards, including:
- Identifying slip, trip, and fall risks, and electrical shock exposure possibility from water damage
- Checking damaged building materials for biohazards such as lead paint or asbestos, including "sound" materials we might need to cut, remove, or drill to achieve mitigation or remediation goals
- Detecting the presence of firefighting water in building cavities which could cause structural collapse
- Evaluating load-bearing structures and supports for integrity after charring, burn-through, or water incursion
- Determining if air quality or residues pose toxicity concerns
How Do Fire-Damage Recovery Professionals Control the Work Site for Safety Considerations?
SERVPRO establishes work area boundaries and creates spaces for equipment and supplies. We often build a containment partition with 1.6 mil polyethylene to seal off the working area so we can filter the air with negative pressure scrubbers and prevent drift of smoke, soot, and other residues. Warning signs and barrier tapes communicate vital safety information to occupants and workers. If SERVPRO employees wear personal protective equipment, we identify a dressing and undressing space to avoid tracking debris and residues elsewhere in your home.
Rely on the professionals of SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn, to attend to the significant safety and health concerns at any fire damage restoration site. Contact us at (978) 744-0409 to explore how we can work together to get your home back to preloss condition quickly while controlling hazardous conditions.
How Does SERVPRO Handle Smoke, Odors, and Fire Damage After a Fire Incident In Your Saugus Home
Whether it is a small fire or large fire, SERVPRO can help restore your home to pre loss condition.
SERVPRO has the equipment needed to remove smoke odors from your Saugus home
One of the biggest concerns after a house fire is not charred furniture or burnt walls, but the long-lasting impact of offensive smoke odors that can linger even after the house is clean and damaged items restored.
Fire damage in your Saugus home means that your life was just uprooted from your daily routine. All of a sudden, you have nothing to wear that does not smell like smoke, and your home may or may not be livable. After assessing the fire's damage and securing the impacted structure for safety purposes, it is now essential to go about the arduous task of deodorizing your home and all of its contents.
The first step is to remove the smoke residues as the odor's source can extend the life of the smell. When SERVPRO restorers remove affected contents and clean or replace the affected materials, the smoke smell greatly diminishes within the home. After removing these odor sources, restorers determine whether the smoke damage is light, moderate, or heavy to decide which techniques are most effective in the deodorization process. Although the offensive odor may seem overwhelming and extreme, most house fires have light to moderate smoke damage.
In a light smoke odor situation, the smoke only affects a small area of the home, typically the kitchen, without any significant structural damage. In rooms farther away from the source, there is no detectable odor. In this case, after source removal, SERVPRO technicians ventilate the area and clean surfaces having smoke residues with a cleaning solution such as Wall and Surface Cleaner (#351).
Then, they continue to control the odors by using instant odor counteracting beads or pellets. Technicians may use thermal fogging in the affected area beginning near the source and dispensing less fog further away from the source. Technicians inspect crawl spaces and wall cavities for odor pockets, fogging where needed. They also check the HVAC system within the home if it was in use during the fire. They may use cheesecloth over the vents to see if there is any smoke contamination. Cheesecloth also acts as a protectant, keeping the HVAC system from resoiling during cleaning.
There is typically more structural damage in moderate and heavy smoke damage situations than in light smoke damage. ULV fogging or activated oxygen (ozone) may be required, and an overall more extensive restoration process where the residents often evacuate until completion of the home.

Where Can I Find Local Restorers for Flooding?
SERVPRO has various pieces of equipment to remove water from your home.
SERVPRO is a Certified Emergency Restorer Operating in the West Lynn Area
How does SERVPRO remove water from the home quickly?
The most efficient method of getting rid of standing water is to use a professional West Lynn restorer. Our technicians can quickly set up submersible electric-powered pumps to reduce the standing water level. If necessary, our technicians can supply power using portable generators. Portable power can be the safest way of running equipment in properties with severe levels of water intrusion. The typical duct length for submersible electric pumps is up to twenty-five feet. This means we can transport water from your property to an exterior sewer point or into a truck-mounted water storage tank.
Are submersible water pumps effective at removing all water from my home?
Submersible pumps are a commonly used equipment for flood damage in West Lynn. However, this equipment becomes less effective as the standing water level reduces. Usually, a restorer uses pumps to lower the standing water level to below two inches before switching to an extraction method. Water extractors are available as truck-mounted equipment for residential homes and in portable units, which can be useful for flats or tenement buildings. Depending on your flooring, carpets, and fittings, we may opt for a weighted extraction tool or a lightweight tool with an adjustable wand to draw water from a property.
How can heavy furniture be protected from water intrusion?
- Attempt to stop the source of water entering the property
- Block furniture by placing flood blocks beneath and raise them from the water level
- If it is not possible to block furniture, use a tarpaulin to wrap the lower part of the furniture and protect it from moisture

What Tools Are Used When Drying A Business After Water Damage in Saugus
If you business experiences water damage, count on the professionals at SERVPRO for restoration.
SERVPRO has the tools and training to complete water damage restoration in your business.
A water leak in your home is one thing, but a whole new set of challenges presents itself in your Saugus business. Your main concern is most likely the potential loss of revenue, and then it might be keeping business hours as usual.
Recovering from water damage in your Saugus clothing shop without losing too much revenue may seem challenging. However, using the correct procedures, equipment, and products may keep your business operating as usual. Make sure everything of any value, including merchandise and displays, are off the floor and in a safe, dry area to mitigate any secondary damage such as mold infestations or loss of the retail value of your merchandise.
The critical component in water damage is making sure the flooring and walls are adequately dry. Suppose you encounter wet drywall in front of the leak. In that case, SERVPRO restoration specialists work on drying and restoring the wall and, in some cases, may cut around the damaged area and replace the drywall to ensure that there is no lingering moisture and the potential for mold growth.
To dry the floor, technicians use air moving equipment in conjunction with dehumidifiers to dry out and circulate the air. Air movers enhance evaporation at the surface level to reduce overall drying time. When water evaporates from wet materials, the air hanging directly above the wet area is saturated with moisture and generally cooler. This heavy air because of a boundary layer of humidity that does not evaporate quickly. Hence, the use of high-velocity producing air movers. Technicians place these air movers throughout the room at surface level to enhance evaporation by replacing the cold boundary layer with warmer, drier air from the dehumidifiers.
It is essential to take safety precautions into account when using air movers to avoid overstressing them, which in turn could overheat the unit, posing a danger. They should always have three-prong plugs, safety screens over the inlets and outlets, and thermally protected motors. Some air movers have the ability for "daisy-chaining," allowing technicians to plug air movers into each other. This helps eliminate the dangers of long extension cords posing trip hazards while also decreasing the demand for power in your shop.

How Do Professionals Handle Water Loss to Walls, Floors, and Ceilings?
SERVPRO Lets Saugus Customers Relax while We Cleanup and Restore Their Water Damaged Homes! "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO Brings High-Quality Training, Experience, and Equipment to Water Damage in Saugus Homes -- We Prioritize Clear Communication to Homeowners Concerning Our Efforts
Saugus property owners tend to focus first on the harm done by water to walls, floors, and ceilings. The following is a brief primer on how we approach damage to these critical structural components to prepare you for the interventions you are likely to observe and experience as our crews work to make a water loss “Like it never even happened.”
What Are Common Issues with Water-Damaged Drywall?
Water damage in your Saugus dwelling can involve multiple layers of drywall. If your home has a history of remodeling or repairs, several layers of the lightweight boards covering the same area is expected. Multiple layers of drywall can significantly increase the drying time after water saturation. One sheet can take 5 to 7 days to dry, but that timeframe can double or more if additional layers are present. The extra cost to dry overlapping drywall and the risk of secondary damage such as mold growth might result in us recommending replacing the materials.
Can Water-Damaged Hardwood Floors Be Restored?
As long as SERVPRO crews arrive promptly, we deliver excellent results for water damaged hardwood floors. Hardwoods are dense, protecting against water incursions. Even if the water absorbed results in buckling, cupping, or warping, professional drying allows skilled technicians to sand and refinish the surfaces. Wood floor restoration can take one to two months, requiring the following before ready for sanding and refinishing:
- Initial reduced relative humidity to 30 to 45 percent using air movement above and below the floor
- Continued reduction of the relative humidity, increasing air temperature when RH falls below 16 percent
- Sanding and refinishing only when the floor’s moisture continent is below 12 percent
- Monitoring subfloor drying using penetrating moisture metering devices
Should Ceiling Tiles Stay or Be Replaced?
SERVPRO technicians reach out to licensed asbestos removal contractors if the tiles contain that hazardous substance. Replacing tiles is relatively inexpensive, and makes sense when the materials exhibit stains or noticeable bowing. Temporary removal is typical to permit airflow, and we consult with you and your insurance company when determining whether to reseat the old tiles or install new.
Have confidence that SERVPRO of Saugus, West Lynn follows water damage restoration best practices and strives to keep you informed as the project proceeds. Call us at (978) 744-0409 to get the process started because early interventions show the most successful results.
